Aluminum Scrap Processing for Foundries & Die Casters
Foundry and die casting operations generate furnace skimmings, dross, gates and risers, sprues, baghouse dust and sand fines. V-V Metals has bought and graded those streams out of Cleveland, Ohio since 1986.
Aluminum
Why do foundries need specialist aluminum handling?
V-V Metals processes aluminum scrap by alloy family rather than as one commodity: 6061 and 2024 clips and solids, 7050 cast turnings, 356 slag, dross and spills, aluminum grindings and foil.
Foundry value walks out in the residue, not the returns. Gates and risers get handled properly and then skimmings, dross and collector dust are treated as disposal cost even though a real fraction of the metal is still recoverable.
Alloy identity drives aluminum value more than tonnage does. Mixing 6061 into a cast turnings box costs real money, so we set up separate containers per alloy at the machine and verify identity on receipt before a load is blended.

What aluminum do you take from foundries?
We buy clips, solids, turnings, grindings, dross, slag, spills and foil, including the awkward fractions most yards would rather leave on your floor.
- 6061 clips, extrusion drops and 2024 solids
- 7050 and general cast aluminum turnings
- 356 slag, 356 dross and 356 spills
- Aluminum grindings and machining fines
- Aluminum foil, litho sheet and clean sheet clips
- Mixed low-copper and painted aluminum streams
Your Programme
How the account is run
Turnings are checked for free oil and fines content, dross and slag are sampled for recoverable metallic yield, and each alloy is settled against its own published index rather than a blanket mixed-aluminum price.
- Residue sampling so skimmings and dross are paid on recovered metal, not gross weight
- Containers rated for hot, dusty and free-flowing melt-deck material
- Removal scheduled around furnace cleanouts and planned shutdowns
- Return and residue streams settled on separate lines for real cost visibility
Melt-deck material is dirty, hot and awkward to handle, which is exactly why so many yards decline it. It is a core stream for us.
- Alloy-segregated containers staged at the machine or the melt deck
- Metallic-yield sampling on dross, slag and spill material before settlement
- Free-oil and fines assessment on turnings so deductions are transparent
- Bulk or scheduled pickup for high-volume extrusion and casting operations
- Direct movement to secondary aluminum smelters and remelt operations

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you buy aluminum from foundries & die casters?
Yes. foundries typically generate furnace skimmings, dross, gates and risers, sprues, baghouse dust and sand fines, and aluminum scrap processing is one of our core purchasing programmes. V-V Metals processes aluminum scrap by alloy family rather than as one commodity: 6061 and 2024 clips and solids, 7050 cast turnings, 356 slag, dross and spills, aluminum grindings and foil.
What is the biggest aluminum mistake foundries make?
Foundry value walks out in the residue, not the returns. Gates and risers get handled properly and then skimmings, dross and collector dust are treated as disposal cost even though a real fraction of the metal is still recoverable. Alloy identity drives aluminum value more than tonnage does. Mixing 6061 into a cast turnings box costs real money, so we set up separate containers per alloy at the machine and verify identity on receipt before a load is blended.
How do you set up a aluminum programme for our operation?
We walk the floor, find where clips, solids, turnings, grindings, dross, slag, spills and foil accumulate, place the right container at each source, then agree a service frequency. Melt-deck material is dirty, hot and awkward to handle, which is exactly why so many yards decline it. It is a core stream for us.
Where does our material end up?
Unlike many scrap companies, V-V Metals does not sell purchased material to other scrap dealer houses. Everything we buy goes directly to mills, foundries or smelters, so there is one margin between your dock and the end user instead of two or three. Aluminum scrap from foundries moves to secondary aluminum smelters and remelters.
